Darmstadt-CROSS report + results, 22.11.2009

The favorites won the main races of the Darmstadt cross, which also was one of the main qualification races for the European Cross-Country Championships. Not only the Germans, but also the Swiss and Austrian Federations selected the competition in Darmstadt as a qualification race. Three weeks before the European Championships the German Team is outlined and some runners are almost set.

More than 1.000 runners competed in the 25th edition of the traditional cross-country course on the “Lichtwiese”.

In the mens race Steffen Ulicka dominated the race and should receive a safe ticket for the European Championships. The 25-year old steeple-specialist took the victory in 31:51,4 min. Sebastian Hallmann took second as he did in the Pforzheim cross two weeks ago. Hallmann could not defend last years victory with his time of 32:04,5. Third place went to Christian Glatting (32:24,5min), with marathon specialist Martin Beckmann coming in only 9 seconds later. Richard Friedrich took 5th place and might have a well chance of wearing the German dress in three weeks.

In the womens race Julia Viellehner was just as unchallenged as Steffen Ulicka in the mens race and defended last years title. Making the pace from the very beginning, she clocked 26:10,0min and distanced her closest opponents by more than 20 seconds. The 24-year old will most probably lead the German womens team. Ingalena Heuck (26:34,3) and Saskia Janssen (26:39,0) completed the podium.

The Junior Mens race (8.500m) was eagerly anticipated, whereas the win of Musa Roba Kinkal (26:10,0min) was not a big surprise. However, a rather disappointing performance was shown from pre-race favorites Alexander Hahn, who dropped out after running the first kilometers with Musa Roba-Kinkal and Philipp Pflieger, German Junior Champ over 5.000m, who only finished 11th (27:09,2min). Swiss Christoph Ryffel took second place (26:30,8min) with Fynn Schwiegelsohn (26:34,3 min) and Johannes Raabe (26:39,0 min) taking 3rd and 4th place.

The Junior Women had to run 6.700m. The triathlete Rebecca Robisch won in 24:02,7min after she missed most of the past season because of an Epstein-Barr-Virus infection and a borreliosis disease. In the close race Anna Hahner (24:03,4min) and Mareike Schrulle (24:07,4min) took the minor places on the podium

Irina Mikitenko will run Great Australian Run 15K

Two-time London Marathon champion Irina Mikitenko (GER) has confirmed her participation in the 2009 edition of the Great Australian Run. The 15K-race will take place in Melbourne on 29th of November and will also feature the past two Olympic Champions in the marathon on the mens side (Stefano Baldini/ITA and Sammy Wanjiru/KEN).

Mikitenko will compete against American Marathon Record holder Deena Castor and Australian World Cross-Country Champion 2004, Benita Willis (formerly Benita Johnson). For Mikitenko it will be the second competition “Down Under” after placing fifth in the 5.000m of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. She stated that she is not thinking about times so much but rather wants to concentrate on providing an exciting competition with the other women.

No Ruhr Marathon 2010

The Karstadt Marathon in the Ruhr region that was scheduled for the 19th of September 2010 cannot take place because of financial problems.

The race had to be canceled because the title sponsor Karstadt is involved in the insolvency of the Arcandor AG corporate. Race organisers are planning a smaller marathon event for the year 2010. In 2011 a bigger event might be organised for the whole Ruhr region.

In 2009 the event was won by Kenyan Samson Bungei in a time of 2:09:21. After some 30-40.000 entries were counted in 2004 and 2005, only 10.600 runners competed in the 2009 edition of the marathon.

Windstopper Trailrun Worldmasters Dortmund report + results, 6.-8.11.2009

Former European Vice-Marathon Champion Luminita Zaituc and US-Runner Michael Smith took the titles in the 3-day trailrunning event in Dortmund.

The race consisted of 3 races with an overall distance of 61km and more than 1.000 vertical meters: a 4,2 Kilometer-Sprint on Friday, the 35 Kilometer-”Ruhrklippentrail” on Saturday and the final “Bittermark-Run” over 19 Kilometers on Sunday.

In the womens field, Luminita Zaituc secured a clear victory in 4:10:59 Stunden, 19 minutes of the US-Girl Caitlin Smith. Smith was one of the favorites for the podium, as she also won the TrainsRockies-Run already. Third place was taken by triathlete Silvia Balbach (4:39:49 h) ahead of Antje Möller (4:43:05 h).

In the mens field there was a lot of action during the three days. TransRockies-Run winner Michael Smith could win the title with a strong last day in 3:39:16h. Only 44 seconds later, Mountainbike professional Carsten Bresser surprisingly took second (3:40:00h). Marathon runner Philipp Nawrocki was another surprise in third place, coming home only 19 seconds behind second place (3:40:19h).

German mountain runner Timo Zeiler and the former 5.000/10.000m specialist Alexander Lubina had no real chance to compete for the win – mainly because of the long race on the second day.
