Grand 10 Berlin: Wolfram Müller on the way back; Jan Kreisinger and Joan Aiyabei take victories

In alight drizzle Czech Jan Kreisinger (29:46 min) on the mens side and Kenyan Joan Aiyabei (33:48 min) on the womens side were the fastest in last Sundays 2nd edition of the Asics Grand 10 Berlin. Wolfram Müller was the best German as he placed 3rd in the mens category with 30:26 min.

Mens race
Faustin Musa (TAN) and Jan Kreisinger (CZE) went through 5K in 14:59min and ran side-by-side for most of the race. Surprisingly the Czech went away from his competitor just before km9 and could secure a win with a 13-seconds margin. As Kreisinger announced he benefited from the rather cold conditions and wants to qualify for the 5.000m in next years European Championships. Wolfram Müller held off his German opponents and stated afterwards: “For me as a middle distance runner this, this time is surprisingly well for the autumn season. Müller missed this years home World Championships in Berlin due to an thigh-injury after placing 4th in the 2009 European Indoor Championships. Next year wants to reach the 1.500m final in the European Championships.
Second German was Marc Schulze (30:51 min), who confirmed his PB of 30:23 he clocked when placing 13th in the German 10K Road Running Championships.
Falk Cierpinski disappointed with a time of 32:16 min (7th place) but after 1 month off-training he stated that his legs were not able to follow the top runners. Positive for him was, that he was not hindered by stitches that hampered his performance in the World Championships Marathon 2009 and several other competitions this year.
Dieter Baumann showed that – despite his age of 44years – he is still in shape. The 1992 Olympic Champion in the 5.000m ran a 32:56min for 9th place after he performed as a cabaret artist the night before the race.

Womens race
While the course record was missed in the mens 10K, Kenyan Joan Aiyabei smashed the record in the womens category. The 30-year old improved the previous record from Ulrike Maisch by over 1 minute and stated afterwards that she could have ran faster if conditions would have been warmer.
Dawn Domaschk (USA/38:31 min), Kathrin Wyss (SUI; 38:52 min) and first German Paulina Boenisz (38:58 min) reached the finish well after the eventual winner.

Organisers of the event registered a record number of 6,489 entries from 25 nations for the event, which also included a 2x5km relay and a mile race for children.

Results were published already earlier.

The Ukrainian medical student Maksym Salii (2:28:11 h) and Swiss Luzia Schmid (2:53:07 h) were the winners in the marathon races of the 24th Münich Marathon 2009. More prominent winners were registered in the 10km-race: Sebastian Hallmann (31:30min) and Julia Viellehner (35:07min) are well known figures in the German distance scene and attracted more attention.

10.705 runners were registered for the marathon and 10K-race together. No elite field was engaged and therefore it was mostly a mass sport event without extraordinary fast times in the marathon.

Also European 10.000 Champ Jan Fitschen competed, but just ran with his cousin as he announced earlier.

Jan Fitschen: I’m not finished yet

The last couple of months it was getting quiet around Jan Fitschen. Fitschen was mostly seen on PR instead of running events. Now the 32-year old European 10.000m Champion announced that he is not finished yet and that he has a plan for the upcoming weeks.

After getting married last weekend, Fitschen will pace his cousin in the 10K-race of the Munich Marathon. Following this event he will enjoy his honeymoon and then he wants to start serious training again.

Jan Fitschen was continuously disturbed by plantar tendon problems over the course of the last months but progress was also made since this summer. He did a lot of physiotherapy that included stabilisation and foot exercises. Now he is already able to do some jumps and hopefully the suffering will come to an end.

If the German can defend his European title in next years European Championships in Barcelona is still uncertain. Too often the injury problems crossed his plans, but he optimistically states that his athletic career is still ranked number 1 in his life. Nevertheless he will start some distance studies in the future.

Course records in Asics Grand 10 Berlin under threat

Three weeks after the Berlin marathon, the German capital will host another international running event. The second edition of the Asics Grand 10 Berlin 2009 on this Sunday (October, 12th) is expected to produce some fine results as several top runners from around the world descend on the German capital for this 10K-race.

Marcin Chabowski (POL) and Jan Kreisinger (CZE) lead the pack of pre-race favourites for the men, with both capable of breaking the course record of 28:44 that was set by defending champion Simon Kasimili in 2008. Chabowski has a PB of 28.27 while Kreisinger’s best stands at 28.46. Also Czech record holder Robert Stefko (age: 41) who has a PB of 27.42 could be in contention for the men’s title. Tanzania’s Faustin Musa also goes in as one of the favourites to take top honours.

German hopes in the mens race are on marathon specialist Falk Cierpinski who will lead the national challenge. He will be joined by middle-distance runner Wolfram Müller and steeplechasers Filmon Ghirmai and Steffen Uliczka, the latter will be making his 10km road race debut. Also the 44-year old former Olympic 5.000m Champion Dieter “toothpaste” Baumann will compete in the race.

In the women’s race, Kenyan Joan Aiyabei is the overwhelming favourite with a personal best of 31.59. She might easily smash the current course record (34.53 min) that was set in 2008 by European Marathon champion and last year’s winner Ulrike Maisch of Germany.

Altogether some 6.500 participants are expected for the event.
