First German victory in Chicago Marathon 2009?

Two names will headline this weekends 33th Chicago Marathon (October 11). On the mens side Kenyan Sammy Wanjiru might attack the marathon world record while on the womens side German marathon star Irina Mikitenko could be the first German ever to win the Marathon in the “windy city” Chicago.

With a victory in Chicago, Mikitenko would secure the second consecutive win of the World Marathon Majors Series. For Mikitenko it will be the first marathon outside of Europe and she will face a strong field. Defeating champion Lidiya Grigoryeva and this years London marathon 3rd place finisher Liliya Shobukhova (both from Russia) will provide an interesting race. The American hopes are on Deena Kastor, who holds the 2nd fastest marathon-PB (2:19:36, Chicago 2005) in the field. The african challengers will most probably be the two Ethiopians Elfenesh Alemu (2:24:29 h) and Teyba Erkesso (2:24:18 h).

The course record in Chicago was set by Paula Radcliffe in 2002 with the second fastest time in history (2:17:18). The race will start at 7.30AM (UTC – 7h) local time (i.e. 14.30 CEST).

Married couple Jörg and Tanja Hooß win German 100km-titles 2009

The “fastest couple” of Germany dominated the German 100km Championships on the German Unification Day (3rd of October) in Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler.

In 2004 the couple just missed the double-victory when Tanja Hooß took the title in Kienbaum but her husband Jörg was beat by Michael Sommer. This year the two finalised the triumph. Both already had a comfortable lead after halfway and held off their opponents also when the temperatures rose well over 10°C in the second half.

Tanja Hooß (7:55:37h) defeated the defending champion Branka Hajek (7:57:19h). Also Jörg Hooß (7:21:44h) could take the title from last years winner Michael Sommer (7:36:43h) with Gerhard Läpple (7:37:35h) in 3rd place.

Altogether 141 athletes competed on the 5km-loop.

Results were published already earlier.

Luminita Zaituc: Last competitive marathon in Frankfurt 2009

The Frankfurt marathon on October 25th, 2009 is going to be the last one in the competitive career of German marathon runner Luminita Zaituc. Zaituc is the 4th-fastest German in the all-time list of German marathoning and has a lot of good memories about the Frankfurt race.

Zaituc set her PB with a time of 2:26:01h when she won the Frankfurt marathon in 2001. One year later she got second with a time of 2:29:57h and 2003 she won the same race again with a time of 2:29:41h.

When the gun goes off for the 28th edition of the Frankfurt marathon on 25th of October, the “Grande dame” of German marathon running will be 41 years of age. Zaituc will race against the strongest female field in the history of the Frankfurt marathon, with Kenyans Rose Cheruiyot, Ruth Wanjiru, Agnes Kiprop and Ethiopian Firehiwot Dado being the favourites for the title in the womens race.

Haile Gebrselassie will run in Trier/GER on New Years Eve 2009

Long distance legend Haile Gebrselassie will crown the 20th edition of the New Year Eve Run in Trier. On the 1km-loop through the old town Haile wants to break the 12-year old course record for the 8km race that is held by Kenyan Isaac Kariuki (22:21min).

The race in Trier will most probably be his first serious race after the Berlin marathon 2009. The 36-year old wants to use the race as a build-up for the Dubai marathon, that will take place three weeks after Trier. Haile stated that “the race in Trier has a good reputation in the running scene – especially because of the great atmosphere”.

This year 2.000 runners and more than 20.000 spectators are expected for the 20th anniversary of the “German Sao Paolo”.
