Race preview: German 10K-Road Running Championships 2009

Next Saturday, 12th of September, the German National Championships in 10K Roas Running will take place in Otterndorf close to the German North Sea.The race will take place on a flat and fast 2,053km city-loop.

In the mens race Arne Gabius, 5.000m-World Championships 2009 participant and already honoured with 3 German National titles is the hot favourite. Main contenders should be Filmon Ghirmai, Sebastian Hallmann and defending champion Falk Cierpinski (if he will compete). Also the U23-Juniors Matti Markowski, Philipp Pflieger, Musa Roba-Kinkal and Geronimo von Wartburg might have a chance to run into the TOP-10. However, there are several contenders for the spot on the top and a lot of sub-30 and sub-31minutes times can be expected on the fast course in Otterndorf.

The shining star in the womens field is Sabrina Mockenhaupt. After becoming 17th in the World Championships marathon in Berlin this year and a 32:20minutes 10K only two weeks later she will almost certainly earn another National title – especially because Irina Mikitenko is in St.Moritz for preparing a possible autumn marathon and will not run the Championships. The spots behind Mockenhaupt will most likely be decided out of a bigger group that might include: Susanne Hahn, Simret Restle, Stephanie Beckmann, Ingalena Heuck, Julia Viellehner, Heike Bienstein, Birte Bultmann, Luminita Zaituc, Susi Lutz and Julia Hiller.

Complete entry lists are available here.

Marathonscene will also publish reults and reports of the races.

German team rather disappointing at 25th World Mountain Running Championships 2009

The German team could not cause big surprises in the World Mountain Running Championships 2009 that were held in Campodolciono/ITA on 6th of September.

The race was held on a lap, i.e. on an uphill-downhill course. One lap was 4.3km long with a 275m difference in altitude. The junior women ran one lap, junior men and senior women ran 2 laps and senior men ran 3 laps. The start was 1750m above sea level, which made the races even more difficult for the athletes having to run at altitude. The course required many changes in rhythm since the surface was changing from grassy to rocky terrain.

The best placement for Germany was achieved by René Stöckert in the junior mens race with a 8th place, 2:24min behind eventual winner Xavier Chevrier (ITA).

In the junior category, Germany sent two complete teams and both junior men and women took 13th place.

In the senior womens category, Natascha Schmitt disappointed with 55th place out of 69 finishers and also in the mens category Uli Steidl (54th) and Manuel Stöckert (59th) could not fulfil the expectations in the field of 138 runners. Uli Steidl was World Mountain Running Champion in the Junior category in 1991 and last time he competed for the German Mountain Running team was in 2001, before running the IAAF World Championships Marathon in Osaka 2007. Now the 37-year old might find the way back to his roots. Manuel Stöckert is quite the opposite, being one of the strongest European runners on the mountain running circuit in the junior category of the last years, he could not make the optimal transition into the senior men category.

Timo Zeiler, the currently strongest German mountain runner, decided already at the beginning of the year that he is not going to run those Championships on a uphill-downhill-course and therefore the biggest German hope did not even start the race.

The traditional Kö-Lauf (10K) in Düssdeldorf was won by Kenyan Hosea Tuei on the mens side and German Sabrina Mockenhaupt on the womens side.

Only two weeks after the IAAF world championships marathon Sabrina Mockenhaupt showed a good shape and outrun her African competitors. After running most of the race together with Ethiopian Shitaye Debelu Gemechu the decision fell on the last twohundred meters. Mocki’s winning time was 32:20min. Mockenhaupt will run the National 10K-road running championships on 12th of September and a halfmarathon in Wachau/AUT on 20th of September as her next competitions. The second German in the womens field was Luminita Zaituc (34:01min) in 4th overall. Also Zaituc competed in the world championships marathon but did not reach the problem due to stomach problems.

World Championships marathoner Tobias Sauter injured

German Marathon runner Tobias Sauter, who ran far under his possibilities in the Berlin World Championships marathon was already injured in the race in the German capital. Two weeks before the marathon Sauter started to get problems and a MRI that was taken now in the university hospital Tübingen revealed that the semimembranosus muscle is ruptured and a disc prostrution with several edema in the thigh muscles exists.

A training break of several weeks is needed and even an operation might be required.

Tobias Sauter has a PB of 2:17:27h (Düsseldorf 2008) and placed 66th with a time of 2:35:43h in the IAAF World Championships 2009 in Berlin.

Marathonscene wishes “Tobi” a good recovery and a strong comeback for 2010.

Sabrina Mockenhaupt runs Cologne marathon on 4th of October 2009

Sabrina Mockenhaupt announced that she will run the full marathon distance at the “13. Köln Marathon” that will take place only 6 weeks after the World Championships Marathon, where she also competed in the marathon.

In the IAAF world championships marathon in the German capital Berlin she was the fastest German marathon participant with a time of 2:30:07h and 17th place overall.

Initially “Mocki” planned to run the halfmarathon at the event in Köln/Cologne but as she is in good fitness and wants to win in front of the home crowd she changed her plans. Her coach Heinz Weber said that the recovery time was extraordinary and believes that she can break the course record in Cologne. Until now Angelina Kanana was the fastest women in the race in 1997 with a time of 2:27:27. Sabrina Mockenhaupt recorded her PB in last years Frankfurt Marathon, where she won with the time of 2:26:22h.
