Missing motivation: 800m-runner Nils Schumann retires after several injuries. The “all of a sudden” olympic champion of the 2000 Sydney Olympic wants to concentrate on other tasks after missing the qualification for the 2009 IAAF World Championships on home ground in Berlin.
“Some day you have to be a realist and set new goals in live” the 31-year old stated to German press. He now wants to emphasis more on his company that offers motivational training and nutritional consultation. “It was getting more and more difficult to come back after those injuries and setbacks.” he tries to explain himself.
Schumann was the first Olympic Champion at the 800 meter for Germany and beat world record holder Wilson Kipketerin a tactical race with an incredible kick at the end of the final stretch. Schumann set his PB of 1:44,20min two years after the Sydney Olympics and won bronce medal in the European Championships in 2002. He also took the European Titles in the 800m (indoor and outdoor) in 1998. In recent years Schumann suffered several injuries and also two operations on his achilles tendon were undertaken. In this years German Championships he ran his last competition and clocked a 1:47,28min as a seasons best.

With three days to go to the Finnish Championships / Kalevan Kisat in Espoo I made my last fast exercise today. 4×1.000m on the track with 400m jog recovery was on the “menu” and it went not as bad as some of the exercises in the recent past.
The times for the 1.000m-repeats were 3:02/3:02/3:00/2:58min. Nothing too special and if I would be in a really good shape I should have run 5 seconds faster because the conditions were pretty perfect (almost no wind, 20°C, cloudy). From now on the training will be decreased in terms of both quality and quantity. Monday was the last day I did 30km (11K in the morning + 19K evening). Now it’s time to get the legs and also the mind fresh for the race. Let’s hope that this way the shape will improve and I can run a good time.

On the last day of the 7th European Athletics U23-Championships in Kaunas/LIT the German women were the ones that secured further medals for the middle and long distance squad.
In the womens 3.000m steeple chase Julia Hiller (9:57,44 min) won the silver medal with compatriot Susi Lutz (10:01,87 min) following in 3rd. Only the Romanian Ancuta Bobocel (9:47,90 min) proved to be too strong for the German duo. Former German champion Julia Hiller stated after the race: “I wanted to run faster times this year, but the medal is a good compensation now.” Susi Lutz who won the bronce medal with a new PB and just missed the 10-minutes mark said: “For me the result is totally surprising. On the last round I could pick up one girl after another until only the Romanian and Julia were in front of me.”…”Running a PB in the European Championships is a great thing of course. Sooner or later I will also brake the 10-minutes.”
Germany also had two finishers in the womens 5.000 but Cornelia Schwennen (16:30,09 min) in 8th place and Mareike Schrulle (16:41,55 min) in 11th were pretty far away from the medal places.
In the 1.500m final for the women Denise Krebs was not able to follow the pace of the leaders very long and came home in 11th place with a time of 4:25,99 min.

The athletics meeting in Heusden/BEL is well known for the good performances in the distance events and two Germans followed this reputation to go for the qualifying marks for the home world championships in Berlin this year.
Steeple-chaser Filmon Ghirmai was not yet running aiming for fast times this year and concentrated on winning some competitions, including the German Track and Field Championships. In Heusden he was chasing the standard of 8:23,00 for the first time but failed. Running a brave race, he clocked a 8:28.70min and took 8th place.
In the 5.000m race Arne Gabius wanted to run 13:20,00min, which is the A-standard. However, with his time of 13:28.45min (9th place in the B-section) he was even outside of the B-standard of 13:25,00.

On the 3rd day of the European Athletics U23-Championships in Kaunas/LIT the German distance runners could win their first medal.
In the mens 800m final 3 Germans were present. However, only Robin Schembera could encroach in the fight for the medals. With a time of 1:46,63min he secured bronze behind the two Poles Adam Kszczot (1:45,81 min) and Marcin Lewandowski (1:46,52 min). After the race he stated: “I just had no energy left in the final 50meters. I wanted to get a medal and I achieved this aim.” Sören Ludolph (1:48,31 min) and Sebastian Keiner (1:48,73 min) in 7th and 8th place were far off from the medals.
In the mens 10.000m race Matti Markowski took 4th place in 30:30,46 min. After winning the silver medal in the European U20-Championships two years ago in Hengelo he now missed a medal by some 22 seconds.
Another 4th place came from Christopher Linke in the 20km race walk. With a strong performance he improved his PB to 1:24:29h but was 1:30min behind bronce medalist Matteo Giupponi.

German athletes achieved strong performances in the first middle and long distance races of the European Athletics U23-Championships in Kaunas/LIT.
In the mens 5.000m race Rico Schwarz was close to winning a medal but eventually had to settle with 5th place and a new PB of 14:04.15. The two other German participants Philipp Pflieger (14:09,13 min; 8th place) and Musa Roba-Kinkal (14:11,44 min; 10th place) completed the good performance.
In the heats of the mens 800m, all 3 German athletes qualified for the final, that will be held Saturday afternoon. Sören Ludolph won his heat with the fastest time overall (1:47,99 min). Also Robin Schembera won his heat (1:49,33 min) and stated afterwards that he saved some energy. Sebastian Keiners (1:49,66 min) advancement was not as easy as expected as he could hardly maintain the 2nd place in his heat.
In the womens 800m, Annett Horna represented Germany but was a bit unlucky. Being 3rd in her heat was not enough and running a PB of 2:03.46min she was the fastest women to not make it to the final.
A bit more lucky was Denise Krebs in the womens 1.500m heat, as she qualified with a 4th place (4:19.87min) for the final.
