The German team could not fulfil the expectations in the European Mountain Running Championships that were held in Telfes/AUT this weekend.
The biggest medal hope, Timo Zeiler, lost the bronce medal in the mens individual race in the final, very steep climb of the 11,0km-course with 1.400 altitude difference. After controlling the pace until halfway, the German was gapped by Ahmet Arslan (TUR/1st in 58:26) and Marco de Gasperiin (ITA/2nd in 59:09) the steep part and also was passed by Sebastién Epiney (SUI/ 3rd in 59:19) on the later stages. Despite the somewhat unlucky 4th place in 59:31, it was the best placement of Zeiler in a European Championship Race and he was not unlucky, stating that he was “absolutely satisfied”.
The German mens team with Timo Zeiler, Josef Beha (63:42 min; 28th) and Thomas Göpfert (66:35 min; 45th) “only” took 8th place and could not establish themselves as one of the top-nations.
In the womens race, Lisa Reisinger was the best German in 14th place (66:06 min). Also the womens team took 8th place in the team category.
In the junior mens race, Germany also had a medal candidate with René Stöckert. However, the 4th-place finisher from last years championships lost his shoe after 5 km due to a kick from his opponent and consequently lost contact to the front group. He came in 20th place with 55:40 in the Junior mens race (9,4km with 940m altitude difference).

Germany got an unexpected medal in the distance events of the 25th World University Games (Universiade) 2009 in Belgrade. In the mens 3000m steeple chase Steffen Uliczka took more than 6 seconds off his previous best (8:32,79 min/2007) to win the bronce medal in 8:26,18min. The 24-year old was beaten only by Ion Luchianov (Mol; 8:25,79 min) and Halik Akkas (Tur; 8:25,80 min).
With his time he just missed the German B-standard of 8:26,00 for the home world championships this year by a margin of 18 hundreds of a second! Let’s hope that there will be another fast race for him and we will see a German participant in the steeplechase in Berlin.

With an impressive performance Hagen Pohle of Germany won the 10.000m race walking of the 6th IAAF World Youth Championships in Brixen/Bressanone (ITA). With his winning time of 41:35.99min he also bettered the previous championships record (41:49.91min from Russia’s Stanislav Emelyanov achieved in Ostrava two years ago).
Pohle went out aggressive, clocking 4:03 for the first km and went through 5.000m in 20:43.37. Building a 40m gap after the first quarter of the race, the 17-year old went on to secure a “wire-to-wire” victory, with Dementiy Cheparev (41:53,76 min) becoming second.
“I had no special tactics today, but I was wondering why nobody followed me” he stated after the race.

For the first time in its history, AIMS, the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races, is conferring a one-of-kind honour, ‘The Marathon of the Decade, and named the real,-Berlin Marathon as its first recipient.
AIMS is thus giving recognition to the important achievements of the Berlin Marathon with its unparalleled series of World records over the past decade. Six world records, from 1998 to 2008, document the high quality of the Berlin event – a performance never before achieved by any other Marathon event.
AIMS not only took the quality of the top performances into consideration, but also the incredibly high number of runners (from over 100 countries) who competed. With over 35,000 finishers last year, the Berlin race second in the world in participation.
The Berlin Marathon began in 1974 under the direction of Horst Milde (Race Director until 2004) with 286 runners in the Grunewald Forest; In 1981, the race “moved” to the city with the start at the Reichstag; starting in 1990 after the fall of the Berlin Wall – with a then record number of 25,000 runners (the limit at the time) – and the live television broadcasting in Japan, the marathon joined the ranks of the top events.
“For AIMS, the Berlin Marathon is an excellent event, which we are proud of, which has written international sport history through its success, and which provides an excellent example of how through good cooperation with the institutions in a city, sport can positively affect the lives of its citizens,” said AIMS President Hiroaki Chosa.

The German Athletics Federation DLV nominated the team for the U23-European Championships 2009 that will take place in Kaunas (LIT) from 16th to 19th of July. Several medals are expected as, six German athletes currently lead the European Rankings. However in the distance events the expectations are not as high, even if some medals seem to be possible.

After the German Championships took place in Ulm last weekend, the German Athletics Federation (DLV) nominated further athletes for the home world championships in Berlin this year. The last nomination will take place on August 2nd and until then there is still time to achieve qualifying performances. In the distance events there are still hopes on the mens side, whereas on the womens side it seems that only over 800m there are realistic chances. The most important meet for the German runners will be in Heusden/NED. Arne Gabius is chasing the 5.000m standard of 13:25min and also 1.500m-hope Wolfram Müller is expected to follow the already qualified 1.500m-runners Carsten Schlangen and Stefan Eberhardt.

The race favourites took the National titles in a hot and sunny German Championship in Ulm. With 5.000m being the longest distance of the meet, qualifying times for the IAAF World Championships in Berlin 2009 were – as expected – out of reach.
In the womens race Sabrina Mockenhaupt dominated the race from the beginning, even the pace of 3:15min/km was rather slow. Mockenhaupt just wanted to defend her title without spending too much energy. She will need the energy in the next weeks, when she is preparing for the World Championships where she is probably running the 10.000m and the marathon. Mockenhaupts winning time was 16:15,65min. Second place went to Birte Bultmann (16:27,82) ahead of marathon runner Ulrike Maisch (16:28,23).
In the mens race Arne Gabius went to the front after the passing the early leader Sebastian Hallmann at around halfway. With two round to go he went clear of his closest competitors and won with a time of 13:50,48 min ahead of Musa Roba-Kinkal (13:59,11). Christian Glatting, who ran for Germany in the European Team Championships in Leiria got third in 14:01,37min. Gabius now wants to break the required 13:25min mark to qualify for the World Championships at a race in Heusden/NED in two weeks.

German race walker Melanie Seeger probably experienced her season highlight last week, giving birth to a daughter named Helena. As reported earlier, Seeger will miss the home World Championships but is planning to come back in 2010.
