October 30, 2008
The Frankfurt marathon 2008 saw a lot of great performances in almost perfect conditions (only some wind disturbed the runners during some parts).
In the men’s race the unknown 20-year old Kenyan Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot ran a new course record of 2:07:21 in his first ever marathon. Also for the German marathonscene it was a big day, because in the men’s race two Germans could go sub 2:15! The 25-year old Andre Pollmächer could fulfill the hopes of his eagerly anticipated marathon debut and finished with a time of 2:14:18. However, after the race he told that the last 4km he was running like in trance and felt really bad – close to loose consciousness. Until km 33 he was running together with the reigning German marathon champion Martin Beckmann. At the end the much more experienced Beckmann finished in a personal best of 2:14:30. The 31-year old felt as good as never before in a marathon and thinks that he can still improve in the next marathons. Both Andre Pollmächer and Martin Beckmann have a good chance of being selected for the 2009 world championships in Berlin in fact they are already set if they don’t get injured or Pollmächer is running 10.000m) where Germany will compete with a marathon team also on the men’s side.
The women’s race was won by Beijing 10000m-Olympian Sabrina Mockenhaupt (GER) in a time of 2:26:22. This is an improvement of over 3minutes of her personal best, which she set in last years marathon debut. Mockenhaupt took the lead from the very beginning and always looked in control of the race. Nevertheless she stated that on the last 4km she was lucky that she had a comfortable lead over her competitors because she was getting really tired. She was confident that she could have run a sub 2:26 with a more steady pace. Second place went to Russian Olesya Nurgalieva with a PB of 2:27:37 ahead of third place Melanie Kraus with 2:28:20. For the 34-year old German it was the second fastest time ever (PB: 2:27:58 in Berlin 2000). Considering the fact that it was already her 3rd marathon this year and she had only few months to recover from the Olympic marathon it is a respectable time. Kraus had problems to start the engine in the first half of the race and as a concequence she ran a negative split (1:14:45+1:13:35). She can now hope to be selected for next year’s world champs marathon in the German capital Berlin (qualification time: 2:32).

Around 1.900 runners participated in the 46 Essen marathon “Around the Lake Baldeney”. Tobias Sauter used the good weather conditions to record a PR of 2:18:24. This performance lifts him to third position in the German TOP performances of 2008.
After a group of 3 runners plus pacemaker Alexander Lubina were running together the first half in approx. 1:09:20, Tobia Sauter was the only one to run a negative split (2nd half in 1:09:04). Manuel Mayer took second place in the race with a time of 2:21:12, which places him 6th in the German TOP 10 of 2008. Marathon debutant Zelalem Martel faded quite badly in the second half and eventually secured 3rd place in 2:29:32, only 3 seconds ahead of Sebastian Lüning. It remains to be seen if the 22-year old Martel will learn from this experience and can convert his speed (this year he ran 10.000m in 28:34,24min and 5.000m in 13:38,10) to the marathon.
In the womens race Silvia Krull took the victory with a time of 2:38:21 ahead of Birgitt Bohn in 2:43:04. With those performances the 2 women went to 6th and 7th place in the German TOP 10 2008.

Steffen Justus was the winner of the 23th Munich marathon. The 26-year old professional triathlete crossed the finish line in the Olympic stadium as the first marathoner. In the first marathon race of his career he clocked a respectable time of 2:21:38. His secret was to attack in the second part of the race and this proved to be the right tactic. At km 29 he overtook the early leader of the race, Peter Rodewald and constantly increased the gap until the finish. However, also for 2nd place finisher Rodewald the 2:24:23 was a personal record. After a strong first half (1:10:45) Rodewald had to pay some toll to the warm weather conditions (about 20°C) and lost some time on the later stages of the race. Christian Discherl took 3rd place with a distant 2:31:57.
In the women’s race Melanie Hohenester secured the victory in 2:49:19. Like the men’s winner she is also a professional triathlete. The minor places on the podium were taken by Bianca Meyer (GER, 2:56:23) and Laura Ursella (ITA, 2:56:52). World Duathlon-Champion Ulrike Schwalbe, who was in the lead pack until km 22 could not maintain the early pace and dropped to 4th place.
The two winners of the marathon can call themselves Munich Heroes now, because they won both the Munich triathlon and the Munich marathon 2008. Since they also met the required times, the will get a price money of 10.000€ for this performance.
In the 10K Sebastian Hallmann made an appearance, after he was not seen for a long time in the German distance running scene. His victory in 30:09min shows that he is right in shape and good performances can be expected in future races.

Rather bad conditions (rain and squally wind) was one of the biggest problems in the 2008 edition of the Cologne marathon. Nevertheless there were some great performances and if there would have been better weather even better times would have been possible.
Men’s marathon: Even if some of the elite athletes had big problems in the narrow curves of the course (after 19km couple of runners in the lead pack fell down) there was a new course record. Sammy Kurgat (KEN) improved the old mark by 21 seconds and just missed a sub 2:10, clocking 2:10:01 for a comfortable win. Defending champion Daniel Too (KEN) could not repeat last year’s victory but secured 2nd place with a new PR of 2:10:37 ahead of Thomas Chemitei (KEN, 2:11:17). Fastest German was Mike Mariathasan, who had to run alone from the very beginning of the race. Until km 30 he was on course 2:22/2:23 but then the weather took its toll and finally he came home in 2:25:49 (11th overall!). After all it was a reasonable comeback for Mike, even if he could not improve his PR of 2:23:52 (Hamburg 2005). 2nd German was Ansgar Varnhagen in 14th overall (02:30:16h) with Thorsten Kwekkeboom in 3rd (02:34:40h, 18th overall)
Women’s marathon: German Luminita Zaituc and Ethiopian Robe Tula Guta battled it out in the women’s race. The two were running together for around 40 kilometers, when the Ethiopian broke away and won in a time of 2:29:36. Luminita Zaituc, who made the pace for pretty much the whole race to secure a good time, had to settle in 2nd but still ran a 2:29:57. With this time the experienced woman who just turned 40 has a realistic chance to be on the marathon team for next year’s World Championships in Berlin.
Halfmarathon races: The big story of the halfmarathon was Sabrina Mockenhaupt. The 10.000m-Olympian 2008 used the halfmarathon in Cologne as the last tune up for the Frankfurt Marathon. Untouched by the partly very strong winds she improved her PR by 1:44min to come home in a superb 1:08:51. Only 3 men were faster than her in overall classification.

German distance hope André Pollmächer is ready for his comeback. After winning the European Cup 10.000m title in 2007 and running a PB of 27:55,56 the same year, he struggled with several injuries, that forced him to cancel the World Championships 2007 in Osaka and the Olympics 2008. Now he is concentrating more on the road events and wants to qualify for the marathon of the World Championships 2009 in Berlin. That’s why he is running his marathon-debut this year on October, 26th in Frankfurt and is aiming for the A-standard of 2:13:00. As a preparation he will compete in the Berlin Asics Grand 10 on October, 12th.
The marathon debut will for sure be eagerly anticipated, because when Andre Pollmächer is running in a competition (normally he is not running more than 5-6 races a year) he usually produces high-class performances.

The 35th real,- BERLIN-MARATHON in the German capital, which was held on September, 28th will be remembered for a long, long time because of several records that were broken in the event.
35.913 runners and walkers reached the finish line short behind the Brandenburg gate. This is an improvement of 3.300 finishers compared to last year and makes this years Berlin marathon the 5th biggest worldwide marathon ever (behind New York 05, 06 and 07 and Boston 96). Furthermore on no other course there have been set so many world records – Haile Gebrselassie’s 2008 world record was already the 7th in the history of Berlin. Counting the 10 fastest times of one marathon (and different years) together, Berlin regained the 1st place from London again (Berlin: avg of 2:05:33,6h vs. London: avg of 2:05:57,6h).
Men’s race
The race of the men started off fast from the very beginning. Apart from Haile Gebrselassie and his four pacemakers the lead group also included Kenyans James Kwambai and Charles Kamathi. The pace moved to world record pace quickly and stayed there all the way. The 7-men leading group went through the halfmarathon mark in 62:04min and after this point the pacemaker dropped out one by one. The last pacemaker could lead Haile and his last opponent James Kwambai until km 32. Charles Kamathi was dropped after 25km but eventually came home 3rd in 2:07:48h. It was not until km 37 that Haile was on his own and James Kwambai could not maintain world record pace anymore, coming home second in 2:05:36. Haile continued with the blistering pace and achieved his big aim of becoming the first human to run sub 2:04h. He set his 27th world record (20 official +7 inofficial distances) clocking 2:03:59h.
Also the German marathon runners used the perfect conditions (almost no wind, mild temperatures) and Falk Cierpinski improved his personal best once again, now being at 2:13:30h. Cierpinski ran to almost even splits for the halfmarathons (01:06:21+1:07:09) and got 9th place overall. Second German was Stefan Koch in 12th place overall. Koch also had a pretty perfect day. Although he ran most of the race alone after the pacemaker dropped out at around 25k, Koch clocked a negative split (01:07:59+01:07:39) to run a PB of 02:15:38h. Third German (21st overall) was marathonscene.com-man Erik Haß in 2:22:16 (1:09:52+1:12:18), who was on sub 2:20-pace until km 38 and then hit the wall, requiring 8:20 for the last 2,195km. Several other Germans (e.g. Christian Seiler, Denis Pyka, Jens Bormann) started out strong but hit the wall strongly or even had to drop out.
Women’s race
As by most specialist expected the women’s race was won by German Irina Mikitenko. However, the way she won the race was rather unexpected and surprised both spectators, race organisers and marathon specialists.
Early in the race the Ethiopian (Askale Tafa Magarsa, Shuru Deriba ) and Kenyan (Helena Kirop, Rose Cheruiyot) women set a high pace with Mikitenko applying a more defensive tactic. The lead pack started the first 10k in 32:49 (2:18:30-pace) with Mikitenko some 20 seconds behind. After Magarsa and Kirop passed halfway in 69:37 and Mikitenko in 70:05, Mikitenko started to close the gap and at around 25k she was in leading position of the women’s race. In the last kilometers Mikitenko could increase the pace and finished a new German Record of 2:19:19h. This means she is now the 4th-fastest women ever and the first German women sub 2:20. Askale Magarsa ran a top-class time of 2:21:31h to become second place, with Helena Kirop in 2:25:01h closing in third.
Second and third German’s in the women’s race were Dr. Susanne Bog (02:48:48) and Beata Baginska (02:48:56) in 15th and 16th place.
