Following the European Indoor Championships, the German Cross-Country Championships 2009 took place this weekend in Ingolstadt. Video-footage of the event can be found from here.
Men long distance:
German reigning 5.000m Champ Arne Gabius soon was the leader of the race and ran a lonely race. The battle about second place was won by Sebastian Hallmann, who came back after having a low in the middle of the race. Defending champion Stephan Hohl had to settle with 3rd place.
Men middle distance:
Another great showing of Wolfram Müller at the end of his winter season. After staying in the pack for the first parts of the race he attacked with about 1km to go and opened a gap of 9 seconds over the last kilometer. Second place was decided on the last meters, whereas Christoph Lohse marginally outkicked Carsten Schlangen.
Women’s race:
As expected Sabrina Mockenhaupt dominated the field and got her 6th national cross title. The 20sec-lead she had at 3km was extended to 39seconds in the finish. Susanne Hahn came in for a distant but unchallenged 2nd place and Junior Julia Hiller outran Ingalena Heuck in the challenge for the Bronce medal.

Several great performances were shown in the German Indoor Nationals in pretty much all competitions – lots of PBs/SBs and qualification standards for the European Indoor Championships.
It seems Germany finally has some international middle distance runners on the male side again. On the women’s side the picture was pretty weak (except for the 3000m time of Sabrina Mockenhaupt).

The Darmstadt Cross was the last qualification race for the European Cross Country Championships 2008 in Brussels. After the competition the coaches and officials announced, that there will most probably be 6 German teams in Belgium (male and female teams for main category, junior and youth races).
Sebastian Hallmann secured a comfortable win in the men’s race, stating that “… the race was not as tough as some of the training sessions in the last weeks”. In the 3rd of 8 rounds he settled in first place and continuously increased his lead. Steffen Uliczka and Jan Förster took the minor places on the podium.
In the womens race Julia Viellehner took first place ahead of Birte Bultmann and the two Juniors Ingalena Heuck and Julia Hiller.
The Darmstadt Cross brought most of the best German distance runners together and even some top marathoners (e.g. Falk Cierpinski, Susanne Hahn, Ulrike Maisch,…) challenged the cross specialists.

With 795 relays and altogether 4184 the 16th edition of the marathon-relay in Berlin reported a new record in participation figures. The event location at the edge of the “Grunewald” was totally crowded and the runners enjoyed good running conditions (sunny+cool). In the men’s race 5 runners participate per relay team, while in the women’s category the marathon distance is covered by a relay of 6 runners.
This year’s winning times were somewhat short of the course records (men: 2:12:22/1995; women: 2:44:29/2001) but nevertheless respectable times were achieved.

The Frankfurt marathon 2008 saw a lot of great performances in almost perfect conditions (only some wind disturbed the runners during some parts).
In the men’s race the unknown 20-year old Kenyan Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot ran a new course record of 2:07:21 in his first ever marathon. Also for the German marathonscene it was a big day, because in the men’s race two Germans could go sub 2:15! The 25-year old Andre Pollmächer could fulfill the hopes of his eagerly anticipated marathon debut and finished with a time of 2:14:18. However, after the race he told that the last 4km he was running like in trance and felt really bad – close to loose consciousness. Until km 33 he was running together with the reigning German marathon champion Martin Beckmann. At the end the much more experienced Beckmann finished in a personal best of 2:14:30. The 31-year old felt as good as never before in a marathon and thinks that he can still improve in the next marathons. Both Andre Pollmächer and Martin Beckmann have a good chance of being selected for the 2009 world championships in Berlin in fact they are already set if they don’t get injured or Pollmächer is running 10.000m) where Germany will compete with a marathon team also on the men’s side.
The women’s race was won by Beijing 10000m-Olympian Sabrina Mockenhaupt (GER) in a time of 2:26:22. This is an improvement of over 3minutes of her personal best, which she set in last years marathon debut. Mockenhaupt took the lead from the very beginning and always looked in control of the race. Nevertheless she stated that on the last 4km she was lucky that she had a comfortable lead over her competitors because she was getting really tired. She was confident that she could have run a sub 2:26 with a more steady pace. Second place went to Russian Olesya Nurgalieva with a PB of 2:27:37 ahead of third place Melanie Kraus with 2:28:20. For the 34-year old German it was the second fastest time ever (PB: 2:27:58 in Berlin 2000). Considering the fact that it was already her 3rd marathon this year and she had only few months to recover from the Olympic marathon it is a respectable time. Kraus had problems to start the engine in the first half of the race and as a concequence she ran a negative split (1:14:45+1:13:35). She can now hope to be selected for next year’s world champs marathon in the German capital Berlin (qualification time: 2:32).
