27th Dresdner Kleinwort Frankfurt Marathon report + results, 26.10.2008
October 30, 2008
The Frankfurt marathon 2008 saw a lot of great performances in almost perfect conditions (only some wind disturbed the runners during some parts).
In the men’s race the unknown 20-year old Kenyan Robert Kiprono Cheruiyot ran a new course record of 2:07:21 in his first ever marathon. Also for the German marathonscene it was a big day, because in the men’s race two Germans could go sub 2:15! The 25-year old Andre Pollmächer could fulfill the hopes of his eagerly anticipated marathon debut and finished with a time of 2:14:18. However, after the race he told that the last 4km he was running like in trance and felt really bad – close to loose consciousness. Until km 33 he was running together with the reigning German marathon champion Martin Beckmann. At the end the much more experienced Beckmann finished in a personal best of 2:14:30. The 31-year old felt as good as never before in a marathon and thinks that he can still improve in the next marathons. Both Andre Pollmächer and Martin Beckmann have a good chance of being selected for the 2009 world championships in Berlin in fact they are already set if they don’t get injured or Pollmächer is running 10.000m) where Germany will compete with a marathon team also on the men’s side.
The women’s race was won by Beijing 10000m-Olympian Sabrina Mockenhaupt (GER) in a time of 2:26:22. This is an improvement of over 3minutes of her personal best, which she set in last years marathon debut. Mockenhaupt took the lead from the very beginning and always looked in control of the race. Nevertheless she stated that on the last 4km she was lucky that she had a comfortable lead over her competitors because she was getting really tired. She was confident that she could have run a sub 2:26 with a more steady pace. Second place went to Russian Olesya Nurgalieva with a PB of 2:27:37 ahead of third place Melanie Kraus with 2:28:20. For the 34-year old German it was the second fastest time ever (PB: 2:27:58 in Berlin 2000). Considering the fact that it was already her 3rd marathon this year and she had only few months to recover from the Olympic marathon it is a respectable time. Kraus had problems to start the engine in the first half of the race and as a concequence she ran a negative split (1:14:45+1:13:35). She can now hope to be selected for next year’s world champs marathon in the German capital Berlin (qualification time: 2:32).
