Irina Mikitenko wins Women’s World Marathon Majors title

After Ethiopian Gete Wami placed “only” 6th in the 2008 ING New York City Marathon, both Irina Mikitenko and Gete Wami had 65 points in the World Marathon Majors series 2007/2008. The five race directors had to decide who is the winner and did so in an unanimous vote. Irina Mikitenko was made the champion and she now shares 1 million US-$ with the winner of the Men’s World Marathon Majors title, Martin Lel, who was already the winner before the NYC-marathon.
