Marathonscene - Part 42

Austrian Andrea Mayr takes home victory in Vienna city marathon with new national record while Günther Weidlinger falls short of improving the national mark

In a real unique marathon in Vienna, Kenya’s Gilbert Kipruto Kirwa and Austria’s Andrea Mayr were the winners of an interesting race. The special thing about the race was, that the whole elite field consisted of marathon debutants only!

23 year-old Kirwa took the race with a fine 2:08:21h ahead of Ethiopia’s Dereje Debele Tulu (2:09:08h) and Joseph Maregu (Kenya/ 2:09:25h). Despite the fact that the elite field consisted of rookies only, 4 men went sub 2:10. Never before in the history of the Vienna City marathon the results were so good.
Austrian hope and former steeplechaser Günther Weidlinger, ran an encouraging debut in Vienna. But in the end he was unlucky, because he missed the 23-year old Austrian record by just 17 seconds. Weidlinger finished in ninth with 2:12:39. “I was well in time for the record for a long time, but the final two kilometres really killed me. I could not run any more. To finish ninth is okay for me, but I am disappointed to have missed the record,” was his comment.

Surprisingly the womens race was throughoutly dominated by Andrea Mayr. The two time winner of the World Mountain Running Trophy also set a new Austrian record, clocking a 2:30:43h. Not bad for a debut!

Lead results were as follows:

1. Gilbert Kipruto Kirwa KEN 2:08:21

André Höhne walks World Championships qualifier

The German race walkers came back from the Race Walking Challenge in Rio Maior with mixed feelings. In the men’s 20K André Höhne qualified for the World Championships 2009 in Berlin with a time of 1:21:30 in 6th place. Also Mike Berger performed well with a clocking of 1:25:12h in 11th place. For him the race was a tune up for the more important 50km-distance. Christopher Linke finished with a time of 1:26:05, which is below the standard (1:26:30) for the U23-European Championships.

Rather disappointing was the pullout of Sabine Krantz after about the half of the race. 10 days after coming back from the altitude training camp in Flagstaff Krantz had a bad day but coach Ron Weigel is optimistic that better days will follow for her. Also the disqualification of Christoph Roschinsky and Christin Elß were a disappointment for head coach Weigel.

“Mocki” is fit for the 10.000m after winning the Berlin halfmarathon in 68:45min

“I am super-happy” that was the short summary of Sabrina “Mocki” Mockenhaupt after her victory in the 29th halfmarathon in Berlin.  With a personal best of 1:08:45h she was faster than two Kenyans and is now ready to complete the next stage towards the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin.

In Berlin Mockenhaupt wants to run the 10.000m on the track. To compete in the World Championships she will have to run 31:45min, but after the Berlin halfmarathon she said that she could run this time already now. After some more training she is trying to run the time either on 6th of June in Ribeira Brava (Madeira/Portugal) or in Utrecht (Netherlands).

Even though Mocki already ran the qualifying time for the World Championship marathon in last year’s Frankfurt marathon (2:26:22) she is aiming for the long track distance. It she should fail to qualify over 10.000m she might still run the marathon as a plan B.

German Halfmarathon Championships 2009 in Aichach report + results, 04.04.09

André Pollmächer and Melanie Schulz are the new German Champions in the halfmarathon.
Pollmächer (64:43min) defeated triathlete Steffen Justus (65:00min) after running together with him for 18K. Polmächers comment about the race was: “The time is alright, the race just went as I planned it. The only surprise for me was, that Steffen Justus challenged me for so long.” After two training camps in South Africa and Mexico this race was also Pollmächers first good performance record towards distance head coach Detlef Uhlemann. Silver medalist Steffen Justus was also surprised that he could set the pace for a long time, even though a time of 64 was his aim. The triathlet will compete in the first Triathlon World Cups after another training camp in Mallorca.
Defending Champion Martin Beckmann was obviously disappointed after finishing a distant 3rd in 66:45min. After crossing the finish line with cramps in both calves he said: “I can live with 3rd place, but not with this time.” Following Richard Friedrich (4th, 67:17min), the mountain running specialist Manuel Stöckert won the Junior category in 67:43min.

The women’s race was dominated by Melanie Schulz (75:42min). After five years of injuries and diseases it seems that Schulz is now again on the right way. In Düsseldorf she will also make her marathon debut and will challenge the marathon-experienced Susanne Hahn, Melanie Kraus and Luminita Zaituc. The silver medal of the race went to Stefanie Beckmann ahead of W40-senior Bernadette Pichlmaier. The best Junior was Katharina Heinig in 6th overall. The daughter of the famous German marathon runner Kathrin Dörre-Heinig clocked a time of 79:34min.
