The only German entry to the 2009 World Cross-Country Championships in Amman (Jordan) – Sebastian Hallmann – took 104th place in the 12km-course of the senior men category. After going out quite bravely (only 8 seconds behind the leaders after 2km) he lost several places and was almost 4 1/2 minutes behind the eventual winner Gebregziabher Gerbremarian of Ethiopia.
The 32-year old will now concentrate on running track and aims to run sub 13:30 for the 5000m. Of course the aim is to qualify for the home World Championships in Berlin.

On March 22nd, Susanne Hahn finished second in the women’s category of the international halfmarathon in Venlo (NED). With a time of 1:11:44h she proved a good shape and just missed her personal best about 16 seconds. Furthermore it was her 2nd-fastest time ever and the 2nd time that she ran sub 1:12h. With this time she currently takes second place in the German Rankings behind Irina Mikitenko’s time (1:11:01h) from Rome.
The race in Venlo was won by Kenyan Magdalene Munkuzi (1:10:31 h).

Cierpinski ran the race only couple of days after coming back from an altitude camp in Kenya, where he stayed with fellow Germans Martin Beckamnn and Tobias Sauter to prepare for the upcoming spring season.

After Viktor Röthlin aborted his altitude training camp in Kenya and went back to Switzerland, he now has the bitter diagnosis: Pulmonary embolism in the right pulmonary lobe. Furthermore the doctors diagnosed a pneumonia and an edema in the chest region. It is suspected that the reason was a thrombosis in the right pelvis vein that Röthlin might have suffered during his return flight from Ras Al Khaima (where he dropped out of a halfmarathon after stomach problems) to Kenya. During the 5-hours flight he was “sandwiched” in four-man row.
For at least 4 weeks the World Championships Bronce medalist is not allowed to do any activity. For the next half year Röthlin’s blood will be diluted and the pneumonia will be treated with antibiotica. If the recovery goes well, the Swissman can imagine to participate in a autumn marathon.

On Saturday, March 14, Viktor Röthlin returned to Switzerland from his altitude training camp in Kenya because of a suspicion of pneumonia. He will now undergo complete medical testing in Switzerland. Röthlin had to reduce the training already on the Tuesday before, because of an inflammation in his foot. Surprisingly on Thursday some symptoms of pneumonia appeared and the 34-year old immediately decided to fly back to Europe. Originally it was planned, that Röthlin would have stayed in Kenya until March 20 to prepare for the London marathon 2009.

Sebastian Hallmann (LG Stadtwerke München) will represent the German colours at the World Cross Country Championships in Amman/Jordan (28.3). The decision was made by German distance head coach Detlef Uhlemann after the German Cross Country Championships in Ingolstadt.
Even with the big aim of the World Championships 2009 in Berlin at hand, Germany wants to be present in the other global events.
Sebastian Hallmann showed several strong performances in cross-country and took 2nd place at the German Championships 09 at the long distance race. Hallmann will be the only German participant in Amman. Eventual men’s long distance race winner Arne Gabius as well as the fastest women Sabrina Mockenhaupt and Susanne Hahn never even entered the equation because of the upcoming preparation for the home World Championships.
