André Pollmächer, who debuted in the marathon last year in Frankfurt with a time of 2:14:18h will run his second marathon in Düsseldorf on the 3rd of May 2009. The former European 10.000m Challenge winner with a 10.000m PB of 27:55,56min is aiming for the official entry standard for the world championships in Berlin, that stands at 2:13:00h.

In her first race in 2009 Irina Mikitenko had to settle with a 3rd place and a time of 1:11:01h in the Rome Ostia Half Martathon (01.03.09). Last year’s world marathon majors champion Mikitenko was running heavy from the start and was dropped by eventual winner Anna Incerti (1:09:24h) after 3km already.
The course was not perfect for Mikitenko, as she stated that that she does not like it when “it is about running up and down the hills”. However, it was a good training run for her and 2 days after the race another 30km run was on the training program. Before the London marathon (24.04) Mikitenko wants to run another preparatory race and wants to perform an altitude camp: “We will have to see where the weather is good at the moment and have to book immediately.”

German marathon record holder Irina Mikitenko will have her first start of the 2009 season next Sunday (01.03.) in Rome, where she is planning to run a halfmarathon. Her aim is a time of 70minutes. “For a personal best it is a little bit early now, because there are still 9 weeks time until the London marathon. And that’s the point where I have to be in top shape” she told the German press.

Several great performances were shown in the German Indoor Nationals in pretty much all competitions – lots of PBs/SBs and qualification standards for the European Indoor Championships.
It seems Germany finally has some international middle distance runners on the male side again. On the women’s side the picture was pretty weak (except for the 3000m time of Sabrina Mockenhaupt).

The marathon at the world championships in Berlin (15.-23.0809) will take place without Sabrina Mockenhaupt. “I will run the 10.000 meter, like I did in the Olympic Games”, told the 29-year old a German running magazine. It is her aim to attack the German record of Kathrin Ullrich, which dates back to 1991 and stands at 31:03,62 min.
“Mocki”, as she is usually called, has a PB of 31:14,21 min, which she clocked in the final of the Olympic Games. With this time she is currently number 2 in the German record books. “In Peking I saw, that you can run great times in a major championship race; that’s what I’m also trying in Berlin now. Mocki even was quoted saying that she wouldn’t even want the place in the marathon team, if she would fail to qualify for the 10.000 meters. National coach Detlef Uhlemann saw the positive effect of this decision, stating that “now we [Germany] will probably have a female runner on the track”.
Mockenhaupts decision also means that there are now at least two more positions available on the German female marathon team. Currently under the entry standard of 2:32:00h were (besides Mockenhaupt): Irina Mikitenko, Melanie Kraus and Luminita Zaituc. Most chances to receive a place on the team are Ulrike Maisch, Susanne Hahn and Claudia Dreher.
